This experiential training explores depression and suicide through an existential-humanistic lens, with particular attention to the therapeutic relationship and the therapist’s relationship with risk. The training invites therapists to consider that working with suicide is not only about knowing what to do when risk emerges, but also about developing the capacity to remain grounded, present, and human when another person is struggling to find a way forward. Dr. Stephanie Souza is a clinical psychologist whose work is grounded in existential-humanistic psychology and a relational, experiential approach to psychotherapy. She specializes in working with anxiety, fear, uncertainty, and the questions that arise as we navigate relationships, life transitions, and the unknown. Rather than viewing difficult emotions as problems to be quickly resolved, she helps people slow down and become more present to their inner world to explore what their experiences may be asking of them. Her clinical work integrates mindfulness and hypnotherapy to deepen awareness of the connection between mind, body, emotions, and meaning. In her teaching, she brings an experiential perspective to the therapeutic relationship, inviting clinicians to consider how their own presence shapes the work.
