Objective 1: Understand how to assess whether your clients are appropriate candidates for couples therapy Objective 2: Learn about antecedent interventions to set clients up for successful couples therapy Course Description Couples therapy isn’t for everyone, and I’m not just talking about therapists! If you do not offer this type of therapy, you may not be aware that certain client presentations or dynamics may be inappropriate for couples therapy. Although similar principals may apply to therapies for other relationships, such as families and polycules, this training will focus on couples therapy. In this course, we will review how to assess whether to refer clients to couples therapy. You will become familiar with situations that could impact the effectiveness of the therapy, and possibly pose a risk to clients, and even the therapist. The training will be structured around an assessment tool that might help you when considering whether to refer clients for couples therapy, and provide guidance on how to set them up for success. Brief Bio: Ann is a couple and family therapist who lives and works in Tacoma, WA. She provides individual and couples therapy to adults, and infant and early childhood mental health to families with young children. Her relational therapy is systemic and rooted in attachment and polyvagal theories. For couples, she leans on Emotionally Focused Therapy and the work of the Gottmans. In addition, she provides discernment counseling, using the interventions developed by Doherty and Harris. She also has a strong background in trauma work, including EMDR, parts work, Treating Internalized Oppression, and Child-Parent Psychotherapy, a trauma modality for children ages 0-6. She shares life with her therapist husband and wonderfully neurospicy adult children. This is part of the Bite-Sized CE Series.
