Course Description This workshop introduces the idea of Radical Mindfulness which reflects how mindfulness and advocacy can co-exist to advance the healing and liberatory goals of individuals and communities. Attendees will: -Learn about cultural appropriation based on examples drawn from mindfulness-based mental health. -Understand the impact of cultural and spiritual roots of mindfulness being parceled out of mindfulness-based mental health practice in the West -Broaden their understanding of culture and spirituality in ways that help mindfulness-based therapists make informed decisions about how to support their clients Learn about Radical Mindfulness, which is a movement that has achieved greater momentum than the movement of integrative mindfulness. Bio: Dr. Gitika Talwar (“Dr. G”) is the Founder of Pranh Healing & Wellness. A Licensed Clinical- Community Psychologist, Dr G uses a biopsychosocial and spiritual approach in her work with adult survivors of trauma. She is the co-author of a paper about Integrative Mindfulness, Recognizing Roots and Not Just Leaves: The Use of Integrative Mindfulness and a forthcoming book chapter about Radical Mindfulness.Her clinical experience draws upon her time working in mental health advocacy in India, an LGBTQ+ affirming counselor with a support group in India, community agency devoted to asylum seekers and refugees in Maryland, justice-involved men in Maryland, a diverse student community at University Counseling centers of University of Washington, Seattle and Tacoma campus. She has also served at a tribal health agency in the Puget Sound region. Educational background: Masters in Social Psychology from the University of Mumbai (India) and a PhD in Community-Clinical Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (United States).
