Description
Objectives -Learn what we TCKS mean by this cultural self-identification term. -Learn questions you can ask to help unpack griefs and cross-cultural challenges that might be behind their presenting problems, as well as strengths. Description Third culture kids (TCKs) are people who have spent a significant part of their developmental years outside their parents’ culture. Increasingly diverse groups of people are recognizing their experience in this term, which makes it important for therapists to understand. Traditionally, because of the community that coined the term, this term has specifically meant people who grew up in a globally mobile way, and that is the group that we will focus on in this presentation. This presentation will help you understand some typical strengths and challenges of this group, and how their TCK experience might relate to their presenting problems. Brief Bio Brianna White is a licensed marriage and family therapist with 15 years experience working with children and families, and 5 years in full-time private practice with children growing up abroad. She grew up in Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea, “re-patriated,” at 18 to the U.S. for college and identifies as a TCK. This is part of the Bite-Sized CE Series.
