Asexuality in Couples

Desccription Despite the best of intentions, couples in which one or more of the partners are asexual often face significant issues in finding providers who are able to support their specific needs. One researcher concluded that “asexual people are at high risk for inadvertent (but still unethical) sexual orientation change practices (also called ‘conversion therapy)” (van Dyke, 2023)*. This training provides a foundational knowledge of asexuality, addresses common misconceptions, and provides clinical strategies and considerations for supporting asexual clients and their partners in therapy, both individually and as a couple.

Learning objectives:

Obtain a basic understanding of asexuality as a sexual orientation, different forms of attraction, and the spectrum of sex favorability in asexual individuals.
Recognize common presenting concerns in couples therapy when one or more of the partners is asexual.
Identify several clinical strategies to support individuals and couples who are in mixed orientation relationships.

Presenter bio:

Kristin Lanning, LPC (she/her) identifies as a married asexual woman and has worked with a number of asexual, asexual/aromantic, and LGBTIA+ identifying clients in her private practice over the past 12 years. She also has 10 years of experience in other settings, working in youth and adult residential treatment and as a crisis clinician with Washington County Mental Health Response Team. Kristin is passionate about educating other professionals about asexuality, as one of the very few clinicians nationwide providing training on this topic.
