Course Description

Dr. Jennifer Cork will review the history of treatment and care for the ID community and how this has led to a lack of understanding and resources to meet their mental health needs. The presentation will then review symptoms of common mental health diagnoses in the IDD community and how presentation of these symptoms may differ in IDD youth and adults. Finally, Dr. Cork will review specific skills to support mental health in this population as well as additional resources for continued study.

Objectives

– Participants will review the history of Intellectually Disabled (ID) in society and how this history has contributed to lack of understanding of mental health needs of the IDD community and lack of access to care.

– Participants will be able to identify potential symptoms of common mental health diagnoses and how they present in the ID population and name specific tools for supporting mental wellness for ID youth and adults.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Jennifer Cork is a doctor of social work (DSW) and licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), specializing in the treatment of neurodivergent individuals with co-occurring mental health diagnoses. Jennifer is a late-diagnosed autistic adult and has more than 20 years’ experience working with individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities. She has worked in the education, disability, and mental health settings. She has also written a therapy book called, What’s Your Anxiety Level? Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Neurodivergent Children and Teens with Co-Occurring Anxiety Disorders, which comes out in November of 2025. She has a certificate in disability studies from Eastern Washington University, is a certified autism specialist (CAS), and ADHD-certified clinical service provider (ADHD-CCSP). Increasing mental health awareness and access to mental healthcare for the neurodivergent community is one of her passions. Besides education and advocacy work, Jennifer enjoys trips to the coast, hikes with her family, cooking, baking, and is an avid reader.
