Objectives: -Attendees will learn about suicide risk factors for older adults -Attendees will explore the significance of loneliness and isolation for older adults and the challenges in seeking support -Attendees will gain awareness about cultural issues that impact older adults from communities of color who are quickly diversifying this segment of the population Course Description: Why do older adults over 85 year have the highest rate of suicide among any age group worldwide? The U.S. population of older adults over 65 years is expected to jump 42% by 2050 and is the oldest it has ever been in U.S. history. How does the aspect of loneliness become one of the highest risk factors as we age? This continuing education course focuses on suicidal risk for older adults and will explore the challenges this population faces after the age of 65 years. Mariko “Mod” Ono, LCSW (she/her) is a clinical social worker at Kaiser Permanente, where she has worked since 2005. She currently works full time at Kaiser Permanente NW, specializing in psychiatric ER crisis services, and is also an adjunct faculty instructor at Smith College School for Social Work since 2007.
