Description Over 80% of health care professionals encounter the feeling of imposter syndrome in which they are somehow a fraud and not “good enough” to treat and support others. And yet, there is stigma in addressing this phenomenon among us as therapists and impact both us and clients/patients. This course will explore how imposter syndrome impacts all therapists—not just new therapists—as a condition that can affect clinician burnout, compassion fatigue, and perpetual self-doubt. This course will also highlight how imposter syndrome is more complex in queer and therapists from communities of color and the effects of white supremacy learning on striving toward perfection.
Learning objectives:
Participants will learn the following:
What imposter syndrome is and how we get “comfortable” with recognizing the symptoms of it as new and seasoned therapists
Effects of imposter syndrome in therapist identity development
How imposter syndrome affects communities of color and queer communities differently from White therapists
Presenter bio:
Mariko “Mod” Ono, LCSW is a clinical social worker at Kaiser Permanente, where she has worked since 2005. She currently works full time at Kaiser Permanente NW, specializing in psychiatric ER crisis services, and is also an adjunct faculty instructor at Smith College School for Social Work since 2007.
