All Counseling Is Career and Purpose Counseling: Reframing Mental Health Practice Around Meaning, Vocation, and Life Direction

Description This presentation challenges the artificial separation between “mental health counseling” and “career counseling” by arguing that all counseling inherently involves questions of purpose, identity, meaning, and life direction. Even when clinicians focus on anxiety, trauma, relationships, or depression, clients are implicitly grappling with how they live, work, relate, contribute, and find meaning in the world. Drawing from theories of meaning-making, life design, and social justice counseling, this session reframes mental health practice as fundamentally career- and purpose-oriented.

Presenter bio:

Valli is a mental health counselor and scholar whose work centers on culturally responsive, community-centered approaches to healing. Her clinical and academic interests include group counseling, collectivistic care, and the integration of culture, family, and community in mental health practice. She is particularly influenced by critical frameworks which inform her teaching and clinical work. Valli is committed to bridging research and practice to support more equitable, relational, and culturally grounded mental health care.
