Description: This workshop was part of the Bite-Size CE series and recorded over a two week period. Part 1: A crash course in Asexuality for mental health professionals. Content includes: – Terms including asexuality spectrum, aromantic, ace/aro, allosexual, demisexual, and graysexual – The Split Attraction model – Range of sex favorability and sex positivity the Ace community – What *not* to say to an asexual person – Ace culture and relevant resources – Understanding complex client identities such as asexual panromantic and graysexual polyromantic Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: -Define and differentiate the terms asexual, allosexual, aromantic, demisexual, greysexual, and ace/aro. -Describe the three common stances regarding sex-favorability within the asexual community. Part 2: A more in-depth discussion of asexuality and working with asexual clients in therapy, for people already familiar with asexuality or as a Part II to the previous week’s training. Content includes: – Differences between asexuality, libido, sexual interest/arousal disorders, trauma, and celibacy/abstinence – Consideration of asexual intersectionality (neurodivergence, race/culture, disability, religion) – Common identity-related, relational, and Existential challenges faced by asexual people – Avoiding harm when an asexual client comes out to you – Clinical and supportive strategies for working with asexual clients in therapy Objectives Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: -Recognize common identity-related, relational, and Existential challenges faced by asexual people -Identify five clinical strategies for working with asexual clients in therapy. Kristin Lanning, LPC (she/her) in Oregon, identifies as asexual and meets with a number of asexual, asexual/aromantic, and LGBT-identifying clients for individual therapy in her private practice. She has 10 years of experience working in acute care and crisis services including youth and SPMI residential settings, day treatment, and as a clinician first responder in Washington County’s groundbreaking Mental Health Response Team.
